HISTORY
OF THE COLLEGE TOUR
Over the
past decade, hundreds of high school students from metropolitan
Houston have been exposed to educational opportunities and culturally
enriching experiences, because of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity,
Inc., Xi Kappa Lambda Education Foundation. Under the theme "It
all begins with a dream and a chance to achieve it," the Foundation
has provided over 50 students from the Greater Houston area with first
year scholarships to assist them in starting their college careers.
Hundreds
of students have had the chance to visit colleges and other points
of interest, through the Education Foundation's “HBCU Bus Tour”
and it’s “College Store” Program.
As a result, this exposure to “Historically Black Colleges and
Universities” has provided them with viable knowledge in determining
options for higher education. Additionally, the “College Store's”
financial aid workshops give them insight into methods and means of
making a college education more affordable for many who would otherwise
be deterred from attending college.
The
“College Store” and “HBCU Bus Tour” programs
have been a source of self-reliance and self-development for many students.
The greatest accomplishments can be viewed only through and in the lives
of those who graduate, and return with words of their deep appreciation
for the opportunity that was presented to them.
